Although by 1935, the Boop series had lost the hallucinogenic brilliance of the earlier years, this title is remarkable for its ethnic transformation of Betty into a Japanese stage performer. After flying to the orient (she has a plane with a dial-an-exotic-land feature) she takes the stage and performes her usual Boop-boop-a-doop tap routine, but then dons a kimono and does it all again . . in Japanese! Several sight gags are predicated on the notion of teeming oriental populations, particularly one stunning animated effect of the audience of uniformly drawn men and women turning around and around in a dazzling pattern. A fascinating cartoon and a striking document of American interest in "exotic" ethnicities.

Pudgy Provokes PETA

. . . It's actually kinda hard to watch -- and kids would find this really upsetting, I think. (The folks at PETA might find this an, um, interesting little 'toon!) On the animation end, you can see the studio getting away from the wildly inventive visual transformations of Fleischer's earlier work and moving toward the more "situational" basis for humor that cartoons would pursue in ensuing decades.

Betty's skirt has lengthened by 1935, and in this 'toon she's settled down to domestic life, trying to get a baby boy to go to sleep. Since she's the only one home, it's unclear whether she's mom or babysitter, but given Betty's character I like to think this is the fruit of some scandalous liason in her garter-flashing days. marvelously, she glares at the tyke with barely disguised malice when he pulls her hair (that hair!) and she flounces around the house like a very single girl. To get him in line she tells him an instructive tale about a bad boy who nearly gets devoured by a lion. In the story sequence Betty appears as a fabulous fairy angel watching over him -- she looks like Botticelli designed her outfit!
