Lousy In Space

I remember when this first aired, I hunkered down in front of the TV with my bowl of cereal to watch it. I was excited by the idea of a revival of another series I loved, along the lines of Filmation's relatively faithful animated Star Trek. Boy, was I disappointed.

The animation was crude...even by Saturday morning standards, and the story was juvenile ( even by Hanna Barbera standards ). Even as a ten year old I could see how poorly executed it was. Still I watched for about 15 minutes, but there was so little to connect it to the original series that I quickly lost interest and changed the channel. The only elements that bore any relationship to the '60s show, were the name of the ship
( Jupiter 2 ), the simplified design of the robot, the last name of the two siblings ( Robinson ), and the presence of Jonathan Harris as a retooled Dr. Smith. Other than that, any resemblance was purely coincidental.

I found a bootleg copy of this cartoon on VHS at a SF convention in the '80s, and decided to give it another look. It was even more dreadful than I remembered. It is really only of interest as a curiousity for the hardcore LIS fan. Too bad... it was a good opportunity wasted.
