What, No Spinach? 10 out of 5 stars

What this cartoon tells me is that if I should ever open my own restaurant, never hire someone who is a “professional eater”, like Wimpy is. For Bluto to hire him, either good help was hard to find, or he paid incredibly low wages.
While Wimpy has always been ready to do anything for food, I think that he stooped to new lows with some of the dirty tricks he played on Popeye. Those tricks were worthy of his boss.
I did like the icebox that Bluto had. I think that would be a great idea for dieters, but if you forgot the combination, you would either have to call a locksmith, a burglar, or someone like Popeye that you could clobber with the safe so that he could just bust out of it.

"Whoa, I forgot to duck..."

This has got to be, for me, hands-down the best Fleisher Popeye short catoon. It's the most "Segaresque" in the series with Bluto substituting for Roughouse (it must truly be hard to find good help when Bluto has to hire Wimpy as a waiter) and Wimpy pulling a few characteristic ploys on Popeye to get free food. It also has some of the best under-the-breath muttering in the whole series (Popeye: Menu? I don't want none of that...). All in all, this is the cartoon I would use to introduce new people to Fleisher OR Segar's world. A masterpiece.
