Meet the Roman Holidays

Reviewed by: richardjf, August 14, 2003

This was Hanna Barbera's third installment in the other-time American nuclear family, in Roman era. Alas, this show would fail to capture what the Flintstones and the Jetsons did. Nevertheless, I remember it mostly for its outstanding opening theme.
With voices by Dom Deluise as the landlord Mr. Evictus, Shirley Mitchell as Laurie and Pamelyn Ferdin as Precocia, the show was full of recognizable voices. Daws Butler would do a merger of Snaggle Puss and Astro for the family pet, Brutus the lion.
A blind date for Evictus' daughter, Snobia (voiced by former Mousketeer Sherry Alberoni, who did Alexandra Cabot's voice in Josie and the Pussycats) is the plot of this one, or the HOlidays will be evicted.
The jokes consist of the generation gap as the father tries to dress like a teen. There is a visiting hillbilly who Snobia ends up falling for after he saves the day when the music speakers go out. Sight gags for the way of life in this Roman era are misplaced as they are reminescent or outdone by Flintstones jokes (Holidays have an hourglass watch, and snails serve as the lawnmower. And there is also the foot transportation joke here too).
It's safe to call this show Flintstones-lite. Flintstones very-lite.
