The Rowdy Ruff Boys 6 out of 5 stars

Reviewed by: oldfogey, December 23, 2001

Another harebrained scheme my Mojo Jojo to defeat the Powerpuff Girls... but this one looks as if it might just work.

Thrown into prison for the umpteenth time by the Girls, Mojo calls Professor Utonium and tricks him into revealing the formula for the Powerpuff Girls. He then uses the children's rhyme of "snips and snails and puppy dog tails" to create super-powered boys. Using the prison toilet as a source of Chemical X (after all, Mojo got his superior intelligence from the compound and so it's in his system as well) the Rowdy Ruff Boys are formed.

When the Girls go out to defeat another monster, they are surprised by the Boys and a fight ensues. The Rowdy Ruff Boys prove to be a match for the Powerpuff Girls. And since the Girls are sworn to protect the citizens of Townsville (whereas the Boys couldn't care less about them) it seems Mojo's creations might just have the upper hand this time...

This episode was loosely based on the 1981 movie "Superman II" and has become something of a cult favorite among Powerpuff Girls fans.

In a 2001 interview, series creator Craig McCracken expressed his surprise over how the RRB have caught on with legions of fans. He was especially bewildered by the number of fans who wrote fan fiction and drawn fan artwork showing the Rowdy Ruffs and the Powerpuffs as boyfriends and girlfriends! His bewilderment stemmed from the fact that the Boys and Girls were five-year-olds; kind of young to be thinking of romance.
