The Superfriends: Fire 4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed by: Michael Powell, August 03, 2013

I've seen the cartoon short and I like it- the only real action there is is a car chase, the Batmobile with Batman, Robin and Rima chasing after the two escaped teen prisoners in the stolen forestry truck. The first chase ends with the wildfire spreading to the wooden bridge, causing it's collapse. Rima summons a brown bear to push over two pine trees to serve as an emergency bridge for the Batmobile to cross the ravine. After stopping for a moment to look at some foot prints and tire tracks, Rima determines a family abandoned their broken-down station wagon and got into the stolen forestry truck with the teens. Robin determines they're driving straight into the heart of the wildfire and Batman has to catch them. The second chase begins: a burning tree that falls catches the dynamite box on fire in the stolen forestry truck and Batman knows he's got to stop the forestry truck, before the dynamite box explodes and kills everyone in the truck. Suddenly, the truck runs over a fallen tree and slips off the side of the road. Robin activates the grappling line darts and they catch the truck, then he starts the line reels and pulls the truck back onto the road and Batman extinguishes the smoldering dynamite box with his bat fire extinguisher. Let's also remember, Batman and Rima rescued two trapped fire fighters in the beginning. Hours later, Batman, Robin and Rima are commended for not only saving the family but for capturing the escape teen prisoners, who do get some consideration from the deputy sheriff for helping the trapped family. However, because the teens escaped and stole the forestry truck, they're in more legal trouble than before. Another good Superfriends short, but this one involves a rescue as well as a car chase, which was pretty much in line with the Saturday morning adventure cartoons of the 1977-78 season.
