My favorite Clampett - so far

Teacher Man

I'll tell you how good this cartoon is - I showed it to a group of my high school seniors prior to their graduation. After it was done, they were dumbfounded. I nodded my head in assent - "Yes, folks, while you think you know a lot about life, there are some things that will surprise you. For example, until today, none of you thought Bugs Bunny was a complete jerk." They agreed with me.

It's dark, it's black, it's sick. It's brilliant. First off, having young and old Bugs, but not present-day Bugs, was a stroke of genius. Burying Elmer Fudd alive is a stroke of genius. And just look at some of McKimson's animation - so detailed, so...well, alive - a big departure from his own later, flat films.

I know most folks say that "Coal Black" is Clampett's masterpiece. But until I see a restored version of it - and not the crappy YouTube print that is available - this gets my vote for Clampett's best...and thus, by extension, one of the greatest of all Looney Tunes.

If BCDB sez it, it must be true: Mel Blanc IS God!

Well, I can understand why some folks might be upset by this one, as it does deal with old age & death & burial. Clampett sometimes used "sick" or "black humor", and I understand some of Calmpett's fellow animators thought he could go over the line into bad taste. I had a friend who thought this 'toon was brilliant but hated it, because in the end Bugs buries Elmer alive, then blows him up with a bomb! I assured him (and everyone else) that I believe that Elmer is alive & almost well. Cartoon bombs do not blow characters up, they just get a blackened face and talk like Rochester for a moment. In fact, it probably blew Elmer clear out of the dirt and back onto terra firma to continue his pursuit. This is a great toon, very rich in comic detail:
check out the stories in Elmer's newspaper: "Quintuplets give birth to Quintuplets" and an aside that Carl Stalling thinks Smellivision will never work. When Elmer starts to weep thinking he HAS killed Bugs ( a routine they had done in several previous toons),
he cries to the classical tune "Traumerei" by Robert Schumann, and Arthur Q. Bryan does a brilliant job of cry-singing. Also, an oddly poignant detail: as Elmer holds the dying Bugs in his arms, the animator (McKimson?) gets serious with Elmer, and depicts an almost realistic, sad old man. It shouldn't come off, but for me it somehow does. What a strange, wierd yet great cartoon.

good, but depressing for kids

This was an interesting cartoon for me. But come on, the whole thing was about Bugs dying. It was so depressing when I watched it as a kid. And then Elmer gets buried alive, which is my biggest phobia...But Bugs was funny as a baby. My favorite part was when he was pretending to be a cop as a baby.
