MPT Coverage: The Mystery of the Lizard Men

Time to do some coverage of Jonny Quest, and the first one to go with is the very first one, The Mystery of the Lizard Men

From the memory, the Lizard Men really do stick out quite a bit probably some some latter promotion and the presence of the episode in the show's opening titles. While some parts of this episode and easily quite memorable, others aren't as quick to follow.

The premise of this episode is typical for JQ as it should be. The Quest group has to investigate what is going on in the Saragasso sea, where a bunch of Lizard Men are shooting down ships with lasers. It is a little surreal to see some early computers being used in this episode to the point it seems unreal these would later become so common place. The plot is good for a JQ episode

We see our first adventure with the Quest bunch however we have no Hadji, it's just Jonny Quest, Dr. Quest, Race Bannon and Bandit. All bringing their usual talents for the mission at the time. All 4 show good signs in this first episode. The Lizard Men are quite memorable and have a good look, and everyone else is fodder pretty much

A lot of the time action can hit hard and go away, I don't find this JQ episode to be a good shot at that. Watching this episode lots of times goes give some wear but still it holds up to be entertaining and with it's likable Quest team and memorable villains, i rank this episode with pretty good rewatchability.

If i have to bestow a rating on this episode i give it a 9/10 A

Grab the Dog!

Okay, I'm just having fun.

But if that frogman hadn't grabbed Bandit, then Jonny and Race wouldn't have stayed on the ship to find him and been discovered by the other frogmen.

Granted, the frogmen may have been feeling arrogant, "How can a man, a boy and a dog defeat us?" but I guess they learned otherwise.

All they had to do was throw Bandit overboard, if he didn't drown, Race and Jonny would have heard him barking, "how did you get over there, Bandit?"

It's not like Bandit would tell them!

If a present-day animator decided to do this show now and mimic Doug Wildey's style completely (no more updating rubbish), if he just removed one of the big quintet, then it wouldn't be the same.

This episode is before Hadji joined, so it is fun to see Race and Jonny work and work so well together, but you can't remove any of the main core.

It's fun seeing an episode when Hadji joined.

The Mystery of the Lizard Men

good, representative episode

This is a good representative episode of the original JQs as the guys go to exotic locale (Sargasso Sea) and investigate mysterious goings on which turn out to be criminals in costumes. Imagine James Bond meets Indiana Jones, made for 'kids' (though this is plenty cool for adults). Recommended.
