Bob & Betty in Adventureland

Television in the Canal Zone was abysmal. The Panamanian stations could ban any English language TV series from being shown on Armed Forces TV, which was all we had for the Americans living down there. But even the Panamanian stations showed really old, dated cartoons in English (or silent era Paul Terry cat and mouse cartoons ), one of them being Bob & Betty. We saw it in the mid-60s.
This show was a joke. The animation was nearly all just cutouts of cartoon drawings being moved around, starting with shots of the kids climbing into their TV set. They often ran closeups of the 2 kids with only their eyes moving, rolling around in shock.
The continuing story line was mildly interesting, involving a pirate villain and his submarine, and one of the villains was a bearded anarchist, who was repeatedly shown in the same pose, arm crossed in front of his face, holding a bomb with a lit fuse. The funniest line was at the end of the story arc, where the pirate captain protests "But I'm only a poor fisherman!" and the police reply sarcastically "In a submarine?"
Even as kids, we ridiculed this series, as it was so cheaply done. Out of morbid curiosity, I'd love to see it again.
I give it a score of 3, tho it deserves a 1, out of ironic fascination and historical interest.
