I remember when this special was first aired; I still have the original TV Guide article on it from '74, with artist Paul Coker's original sketches.
I know I'm gonna be trampling on what, to many, is a beloved holiday classic, but let me be fair with you: it's a tribute to Christmas greed and selfishness all the way through! On the part of its own story, and on the part of the producers. The plot about a small town fearing St. Nick ain't gonna come......WHY? 'Cause they'll get no presents, that's why. At the moment just before the plot's resolution and the sensitive Santa comes after all, we hear "Silent Night," with its (in this context) mindless quotation about the virgin mother and holy infant.
As a religious person, I always found this deeply offensive.
