Ruff And Reddy is among my earliest TV memories. While the show couldn't match the production values of Hanna-Barbera's Tom And Jerry, inventive writing, good characters and excellent performances by the voice artists combined to make Ruff and Reddy a well produced and entertaining show. I can still sing the theme song. "Get set, get ready,..."

"Ruff & Reddy"was Bill Hanna's and Joe Barbera's first cartoon series made for the small screen.Yet? It's virtually forgotten by all but a few fans and some tv historians. The reason maybe that it tried to be a sero-comic adventure series in the same vein as "Crusader Rabbitt"and"Rocky & His Friends".But the series lack the verbally wit and whimsey of Jay Ward.Of Coruse."Ruff & Reddy"was not aimed at adults. It was a cartoon series made for kids and the stories were serious in some respects but funny in others. The humor stemmed from the bumblings of "Reddy The Dog" as he would get himself and his little pal"Ruff The cat"into trouble. The pair would more often than not.Become involved in a situation where their help was required by someone.Usually "Prof.Gismo"the ecccentric scientist/inventor.Who would call upon the boys to aid him in trying out his latest device or to thwart their arch enemies:"Capt.Greedy"(A spoof of movie villian Peter Lorrie),"Salt Water Daffy","Killer & Diller"(The twin mobsters)and the dangerous hunter"Harry Safarri".During the series original run on The NBC TV Network. The running time of "The R & R"TV Cartoons was less than six minutes or so.The rest of the show's format was taken up by the songs, puppetry banter of the program's first hosts/performers The Late Jimmy Blaine and the Rufus Rose/Bobby Nicholson Puppets and some guests performers.Plus reruns of the Columbia/Charlie Mintz Movie cartoons. The combination of the live action music/puppetry segments helped to make the show a hit with l950's youngsters. When the series was revived in September,l962.The heads of NBC TV decided to change the format in order to appease FCC Comm.Newton Minow by creating a more educational kids tv show.Boston,Ma.based kids tv wraparound host/Performer The Late "Capt.Bob"Cottle and his head puppeteer/comedy asistant:Andy Bader would engage the viewers in drawing lession, informational segments and adventure stories of their own that fetured Mr.Cottle's puppet characters:"Jasper","Gramps","Jasper's Cousin"and "Mr.Answer:The Magic Talking Question Box".The stories.Which usually delt with "Capt.Bob"and his friends going on secret missions for the benefit of The US Government.Found our heroes in some remote part of the world.Solving a baffleing mystery concerning nature or try to foil the evil deeds of their arch enemy"Barincle Bill The Pirate".Follwing the cancellation of the series."Ruff & Reddy"would remain off the air .Until recently. When the cartoons attempted a comeback(Minus the live action hosted segments)on The USA Cable Tv Network and until a few weeks ago Sunday Nights on The Cartoon Network."Ruff & Reddy"May not be in the same league as "Crusader","Raggs","Rocky"& Bullwinkle".But they deserve their share of the recognition as Jay Ward's animation creations.Because they made cartoons funny and exciting for kids on tv and helped to launch Hanna & Barbera's careers.Hopefully? They will get their due very soon.Nostalgia Kid.
