Sadness at the Loss of A Better Film ;Glimpse of

Shere Khan ,the Tiger. A companion Black Leopard, The Tooth, Fire, The Red Dogs, The City and it's Cobra guardian. The Live action films of the 50's hint at what the cartoon might have been. The council of wolves and the wisdom[not sillyness] of the boycub Mogli were a better story. Akela a wolf character was a founding element in original Cub Scouting history. This is a good film but an extraordinary work might have been made.

A Disney Masterpiece!

This was the last movie the Walt Disney family have produced under Walt Disney's supervision. It combines the usual 'magical' ingredients, by which Disney created so many wonderful productions. Well designed characters, delightful music, a classic story (carefully arranged in the needs of a cartoon movie), both tears and laughs. Especially in this movie 'The Bare nessecities' and 'I Wanna be like you' are of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. 'Jungle Book' is definately one of the top Disney classics.

Since the present day marks the umpteenth re-release of this all-time titan of Disney features, I figured a few ruminations on my early impressions of the film might be in order.
I'm old enough to remember when this was a new cartoon--I was a 3rd-grader. Since there was a Disney comic-strip in those days (allowing folks outside major metropolitan areas to acquaint themselves with the storyline & characters) as well as comic-BOOK adaptations of Disney's new movies, I knew this story upside-down by the time it finally hit our small-town theater. My parents grumbled thru it, my older sister seemed to tolerate it, I had a BALL.
Could you imagine what it's like--being a 7-year-old kid, and just being told that Walt Disney just died? Well, I WAS, and it was the first time the full significance of death hit me in the face. Of course, there were finishing touches to be made on this film at the time of Disney's death, and it came out a full year (an eternity to a 7-year-old) after the event. And when it was put out, I had the weird impression that "he's still around." .......I wonder if I was put through some kind of denial here?
In any case, this particular film said something very special about Disney and why he was put here on this planet; I disdain the so-called "boomers" (old farts in comparison with me!) who thought the Disney guys got lazy & adopted the Hanna-Barbera TV technique of hiring ultra-famous celebs to do the voices......they NEGLECTED to remember that Disney was doing this as far back as the 40's, with Jerry Colonna doing "Casey at the Bat," & in the 50's with Colonna & Ed Wynn in "Alice in Wonderland"!!!
Finally, it's probably the greatest praise I can give ANY film when the characters (as in "Jungle Book") stick in my memory long after I'm done seeing it......happens each and every time.
Oh yes--I learned to say "Man!" from this cartoon (I went right along with the hippies at that point!). Actually, "Man" was an expression dating at least back to the big-band days (i.e., Phil "Baloo" Harris & Louis "King Louie" Prima), and the Beatle-esque vultures later in the film provide a nifty timelessness......a bridging of the generations!
