"Forty Winks" shows what made Felix cartoons such a phenomenon. Otto Messmer was, plain and simple, a dang fine cartoonist! Just check out the expressions on the crying babies face. The design of the hippo, just a throw-away character, is funny to look at. The cartoon inventiveness that marked Otto and Felix's work, like the tail drilling a hole in a fence, then moving the hole out of frame when it wasn't needed, or firing a pistol across a gorge until the bullets form a bridge for Felix to escape on, then using the long "bullet-bridge-stick" to tickle the hippo. The Messmer Felix's are great cartoons, including this one. Something to admire in every one.
