The only sounds I found disturbing here were the hunter's as the lion charges him. But Tom was still nearly as painful to behold as he was in "Landing Stripling". His anguish is just incredible-- and wrenching-- as he takes more of his master's abuse.
One problem I have with the Deitch series is that it has too much pathos. This is probably the biggest reason why people complain about this series being unfunny. You just feel sorry for Tom too much, want to protect him from his vicious owner. In the older cartoons, you somehow didn't feel as sorry for Tom, because he just came across as swishier, brattier, even more of a genuine villain. That freed you up to cheer more for Jerry, and to laugh.
This cartoon has its moments, though. The music's pretty catchy-- the T&J theme with an African flavor. The ending scene is really cute. These moments helped keep the presence of the master from completely wasting this cartoon.
