Beginning of Rainbowland Part 1

Good Start to a Fantastic Cartoon

Oh, to be a little girl again, watching Rainbow Brite for the first time. Actually, half the fun was tormenting my younger brother by watching it instead of G.I. Joe, but those days are long gone. Instead, I have only my video library to remind me of the days when cartoons were actually good instead of the drek that pervades the airwaves these days.

The Beginning of Rainbowland is actually a two-part series that shows (duh!) how Rainbow Land came to be. To be honest, the first half moves rather slowly as we are introduced to a few characters, notably Wisp, Twink, Murky, and Lurky. Eventually, though, the action picks up in part two as the Lord of Shadows sends his minions out to stop Wisp in her quest to discover the color belt, the Sphere of Light, and restore the land to its former glory. Thus, Wisp goes forth and encounters some evil creatures, meets a couple of new friends, falls into a raging river infested with VERY hungry fish, finds a baby(!), and tries to keep Murky and Lurky off her trail.

The show answers a few questions we had about Rainbow Land, but leaves many more unanswered. For instance, we never really find out where Wisp (her name before she was Rainbow Brite) came from before she got deposited in the soon-to-be Rainbow Land. We also never learn what happened to the previous owner of the color belt, though it could be speculated that the Lord of Shadows held it and then lost it.

Honestly, part 1 is the weaker of the two parts. For a long time, the only version of this show I had was the second part taped off the TV, fortunately with the "quick review of part 1" intact. Part two can easily stand on its own with just this scant back-story, but if you want to know exactly where Wisp found Starlight and Twink, you'll want to watch this one first.
