A nice surprise

A nice surprise

This is typical Betty Boop & Grampy fare: Betty has a situation (a big party last night left a big mess, and she doesn't want to clean it), and Grampy shows up -- ready for a drive with Betty -- and solves it with crazy inventions. That's as good (or as bad) as the premise ever is. It's fun to watch the Goldbergian machinations Grampy concocts to solve each little problem, and to watch him dancing around like a coked-up maniac while he makes them.
However, this short has one startling innovation, not on the plot but on the animation. It appears that, for an opening pan revealing the mess left by the revelers, a complete 3D paper model was made of Betty's little house! I can think of no other way the shot was accomplished, as even the most arduous of animation couldn't have made such a completely shifting sideways pan. Inexplicably, the 'real' house isn't used for the rest of the cartoon, and I'll be keeping my eyes peeled to see if it shows up in another short. But that one little innovation makes the whole cartoon worth watching!
