Cartoon Comments:

I'm In The Army Now 6 out of 5 stars

What did Popeye do, Jump Ship?

Reviewed by: Ray Pointer, January 17, 2003

This is a pleasant "cheater" cartoon that uses clips from SHOEIN' HOSSES and KING OF THE MARDI GRAS, but not really one of the best. Animation in the opening scene seems as if it were rushed through production, as it is not up to the usual standard of fluidity, having been animated on twos.

The storyline is very basic. While Popeye and Bluto flank Olive while walking down the street, Olive stops to drool over an Army Recruitment poster.
She gushes, "I'm just crazy about a man in a uniform!" Funny thing is that Popeye and Bluto, both sailors, granted of the stevedore variety, have uniforms, too. But they both rush into the Recruiting Office with picture albums of scenes from their past films as proof of their verility. Of course Popeye proves the better man, and merely bursts through the wall wearing the uniform from the poster. Although Olive chants, "Ya know what I told ya, I wanted a soldier." Popeye remains, "I'm Popeye the Sailor Man."
